Massive Wildfire Expands on Grand Canyon’s North Rim
In a dramatic escalation, the Dragon Bravo Fire has surged across the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, now engulfing over 105,000 acres. The rapid growth saw the fire expand by an additional 10,000 acres from Wednesday to Thursday.
Forecasters issued red flag warnings on Thursday for parts of the Kaibab Plateau, where wind speeds were anticipated to reach up to 35 miles per hour. The situation is exacerbated by humidity levels plummeting to as low as 8%, rendering the forest fuels as dry as kiln-dried lumber.
Fire managers indicate that the blaze is nearing a transition zone of different fuels, which might alter its path. Furthermore, the fire could potentially self-extinguish upon encountering the burn scar left by the 2018 Obi Fire.
The firefighting effort has mobilized nearly 1,200 personnel to combat the Dragon Bravo Fire, which is currently 9% contained. The financial toll of the response has reached $29.4 million as of Thursday.
Currently, this fire represents the largest active wildfire in the United States and ranks as the 10th largest in Arizona’s recorded history. For more details, visit Arizona’s Family.
