New Unit Established to Review Potential Wrongful Convictions in Arizona

A new initiative in northern Arizona aims to address potential miscarriages of justice. Prosecutors in Coconino County have introduced an integrity unit dedicated to examining innocence claims made by individuals who have already been convicted.

Coconino County Attorney Ammon Barker emphasized the importance of this unit in maintaining a fair justice system. He stated, “This is part of modern prosecution. We want to make sure we are looking at every claim and verifying that we do everything we can to maintain justice.”

For a case to be considered by the integrity unit, it must have exhausted the appeals process. Additionally, those seeking review need to present either new technological evidence or credible and verifiable proof of their innocence.
