Wyoming’s local journalism takes a hopeful turn as newspaper executives Robb and Jen Hicks, alongside Rob Mortimore, announce the acquisition of eight local newspapers. This development comes after the Illinois-based News Media Corporation unexpectedly shuttered its Wyoming titles. The purchase ensures the revival of publications in Niobrara, Goshen, Platte, Sublette, Lincoln, and Uinta counties, with plans to rehire all staff members.
Marie Hamilton, managing editor of the Platte County Record-Times and Guernsey Gazette, expressed relief, saying, “There was a lot of tears, but good tears.” The papers’ resumption under new ownership highlights a commitment to sustaining local journalism. Robb Hicks emphasized, “Our foremost priority has been to ensure that these counties are not left without a credible, enduring source of local journalism.”
The closure left Wyoming communities without critical news sources, sparking swift action from Mortimore and former staff members. Despite the unexpected halt by their parent company, they began efforts to keep the newspapers alive. Hamilton and others worked without pay, motivated by the urgency of reviving community news. The purchase agreement now paves the way for staff to receive overdue paychecks.
Darcie Hoffland, executive director of the Wyoming Press Association, noted the collective support to restore the papers quickly. The closures had prompted discussions on alternative ways to publish vital public notices, crucial for newspapers’ revenue streams. The Pinedale Roundup, already impacted, shared closure news via Facebook, highlighting the unexpected developments faced by local papers.
In the wake of financial challenges cited by CEO Tompkins, News Media Corporation had attempted to sell the company, including a potential acquisition by Carpenter Media Group. However, Mortimore’s acquisition ensures Wyoming communities don’t turn into news deserts, reaffirming the importance of local solutions for Wyoming news.
