Extended School Closure Due to Roof Work and Air Quality Issues at Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary

The Kyrene Elementary School District has extended the closure of one of its schools, initially shut down for roofing repairs and air quality management. This decision necessitates that hundreds of students continue their education at alternative locations.

Operations on the roof at Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary in Ahwatukee were halted after odors were reported by both parents and staff. Subsequent tests revealed that total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) present in the air were over 20 times higher than the ideal levels.

During a recent governing board meeting, Superintendent Laura Toenjes provided an update on the situation. “At this point, we’re probably asking people to be prepared that it could take through winter break, but if we get notice that it’s done sooner and we can get back in the building sooner we will do so,” Toenjes stated, confirming that roofing activities have not resumed as yet.

The closure, initially announced until fall break, has raised concerns over transparency. Courtney Maxedon, a parent, criticized the air quality testing standards during the board meeting. She commented, “A quick Google search will tell you that VOC exposure for children is lower than limits for adults, due to their developing bodies and higher respiratory rates.”

Despite the challenges of relocating, parent Christa Trexler praised the adaptability of the school’s teachers and staff. She noted, “Even while their whole professional world had been turned upside down, the teachers and staff managed to provide virtual resources and set up classrooms in record time.”
