Indian Health Service opens 3 new employee housing complexes in Montana

Indian Health Service (IHS) recently unveiled three new housing complexes for employees on the Crow, Fort Belknap, and Blackfeet reservations. This initiative aims to enhance employee recruitment and retention by addressing the housing shortage in rural areas, particularly affecting Indian Country. Housing scarcity is a major hurdle for health professionals considering positions on reservations, contributing to a 30% job vacancy rate at IHS facilities nationally and 47% at the Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital.

The Medicine Spotted Beads Housing Complex at the Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital in Montana features 18 units accommodating up to 24 health care workers, with added amenities like a fitness center and community area. Although the construction cost remains undisclosed, the complex is integral to IHS’s strategy to mitigate housing challenges. Meanwhile, the Fort Belknap Reservation welcomed a new $1.8 million four-plex apartment building, and the $20 million Akaimi Nitoyiks complex at Blackfeet Community Hospital offers 14 units with 24 bedrooms.

Funding for these projects came from Healthcare Facilities Construction Funds, Non-Recurring Expense Funds, and Medicare and Medicaid collections. Lyle Rutherford of the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council expressed optimism: “The [apartments] are really, really nice. I’m hoping it relieves some of that pressure.” The developments promise to improve job satisfaction and retention for health care providers working in these underserved communities.
