Submerged Pickup Truck with Human Remains Discovered as Lake Powell Water Levels Drop
A significant drop in water levels at Lake Powell has led to the discovery of a submerged pickup truck containing human remains near the Arizona-Utah border. This revelation comes amid a prolonged drought affecting the region.
Authorities state that the vehicle is linked to a 54-year-old individual who was reported missing in December 2023. The remains found inside the truck have not yet been identified, and the case is currently under investigation.
The truck became visible just beneath the water’s surface during the Labor Day weekend at Lone Rock Beach, situated in Utah’s Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The vehicle was retrieved from the lake on Wednesday by officials.
According to Lt. Alan Alldredge from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office in Utah, Lake Powell’s water level has declined by approximately 20 feet since the man’s disappearance. “We have had several bad years,” Alldredge remarked regarding the ongoing drought’s impact on the lake.
The missing truck’s owner was last seen on December 1, 2023, at a store in Kanab, Utah. This case is not isolated, as there have been other similar discoveries in the region.
In 2022, several sets of human remains were found at Lake Mead, another lake within the Colorado River system. Located over 300 miles west of Lake Powell, Lake Mead has similarly suffered from drought conditions.
Among the remains discovered at Lake Mead was a man who had died from a gunshot wound; his body was found in a rusted barrel within a harbor area. Authorities have not yet been able to determine the identity of these remains.
