Bald Eagles Nesting Season Prompts Temporary Closures in Prescott National Forest
As the bald eagles prepare for nesting season in Prescott National Forest, specific areas will be temporarily off-limits starting Monday to protect these majestic birds during their critical breeding period.
Human activities near nesting sites can disrupt the eagles, potentially leading to the eggs being exposed to harmful environmental conditions. To mitigate these disturbances, access will be restricted in areas near Lynx Lake and parts of the Verde River. While these restrictions are in place, rafters are still allowed to navigate the river, provided they maintain continuous movement and refrain from stopping or disembarking.
Francisco Anaya, a biologist with the Prescott National Forest, emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, “The whole idea is to limit potential human disturbance, especially early on when they’re in the, you know, eggling period of nesting.”
Non-compliance with these guidelines may result in fines for violators. However, if the bald eagles’ nesting attempts do not succeed, the restrictions could be lifted earlier than planned.
