Raleigh, N.C.
In a significant boost to Guilford County’s economy, Hoffman & Hoffman, Inc., a key supplier of commercial HVAC systems, plans to create 131 new job opportunities. The company will allocate $40 million to enhance its headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Greensboro.
Governor Josh Stein emphasized the strategic advantages North Carolina offers, stating, “We are grateful that Hoffman & Hoffman is deepening its roots in North Carolina. Companies that do business here know better than anyone the benefits of operating in our state, and they know they can count on our skilled workforce, our robust transportation network, and our excellent quality of life as they grow.”
Since 1947, Hoffman & Hoffman (H&H) and its subsidiaries have been an employee-owned enterprise serving the HVAC and building automation sectors. The firm provides advanced HVAC and filtration solutions, building control technologies, and aftermarket services throughout the southeastern US and Europe. This expansion will centralize the corporate headquarters and increase warehouse space.
Jim Bingham, CEO of Hoffman & Hoffman, Inc., remarked, “The Hoffman family of companies continues to grow because our employee-owners never lose sight of the people we serve. When we put our customers at the center of every decision, success follows.”
N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley expressed enthusiasm for the company’s expansion, noting, “I’m excited to welcome Hoffman & Hoffman’s continued investment in the Triad. Manufacturers like this need a strong and stable business climate to be successful, and we’re committed to providing the partnerships that support this company’s next phase of growth.”
Job roles will offer various salaries, with an average annual compensation expected at $72,176, significantly higher than Guilford County’s average wage of $60,195. The economic impact of the new positions could exceed $9.4 million annually for the region.
This expansion is supported by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) sanctioned by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. Over a 12-year period, the project is anticipated to contribute $487 million to the state economy. The JDIG agreement permits Hoffman & Hoffman to receive up to $1,110,600, conditional on job creation and capital investment targets being met, verified by the Commerce and Revenue departments.
The initiative is projected to yield a 129 percent return on public investment, meaning for every state dollar spent, $2.29 is returned in revenue. JDIG agreements generally ensure net positive tax earnings for the state, despite grant reimbursement obligations.
Given Hoffman & Hoffman’s choice of Guilford County—designated as Tier 2 under the state’s economic tier system—the JDIG will redirect $123,400 into the Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account. This fund assists rural areas with infrastructure enhancements to attract businesses, a benefit extended even when jobs arise in Tier 2 counties like Henderson.
Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger commented on the project, stating, “This is another great win for Guilford County and the entire state. These good-paying jobs are further proof that North Carolina has the right formula for companies to thrive and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.”
Key collaborators in this expansion include the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and various local organizations such as the Guilford County Economic Development Alliance and the Greensboro Chamber.
