Renew NC extends the SFHP deadline to Jan 31, aiding recovery from Hurricane Helene. Over 6,500 apply; projects active across 28 western NC counties.

North Carolina Housing Recovery Program Extends Deadline for Aid Applications

Homeowners in western North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene now have an extended opportunity to seek assistance for repairing or replacing their damaged homes. The Renew NC program has announced that it will accept applications for its Single-Family Housing Program (SFHP) through January 31. This extension provides an additional month beyond the initial deadline, allowing more time for those affected to apply for support.

Governor Josh Stein emphasized the importance of this extension, stating, “It has been a very challenging year for our neighbors in western North Carolina, and we want to give folks every opportunity to apply for housing support. So, we’re extending the application deadline until the end of January to alleviate stress this holiday season and offer more time for homeowners to get their applications in.”

Since its launch in June, the SFHP under Renew NC has successfully processed over 6,500 applications, with repair and reconstruction efforts already commencing this fall. Completed projects can be found in counties such as Buncombe, Henderson, McDowell, and Polk, with ongoing work in additional locations.

N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley addressed community concerns by saying, “Many western NC communities have requested this extension, and we heard you. Communities across the region are still working through the storm’s aftermath, and this additional time will help homeowners gather the necessary information to complete their applications.”

The program, administered by the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Revitalization (DCR), is actively involved in construction within various counties including Buncombe, Cleveland, Gaston, McDowell, Polk, Rutherford, Watauga, and Wilkes.

Designed to prioritize low- to moderate-income families, the Single-Family Housing Program is especially focused on households with seniors aged 62 and older, children under 18, and disabled members. It is open to homeowners in 28 western NC counties and one ZIP code: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mecklenburg (28214), Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin, and Yancey.

Even those who have already received assistance from FEMA or insurance policies can apply for the Renew NC program to address unmet housing recovery needs. In-person help is available in English and Spanish at Renew NC centers in Asheville, Boone, and Marion, with case managers on hand from Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additional locations across western North Carolina also provide varying hours of service.

For more details on eligibility and application processes, homeowners can visit RenewNC.org, call (888) 791-0207, or check an in-person location. The Renew NC app is also accessible through the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

Following the deadline, Renew NC will focus on reviewing applications and advancing eligible candidates through subsequent steps of the review and construction processes. The program is a beneficiary of the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), with $807 million of the $1.4 billion allocated aiding the SFHP.
