Winter Closures in Northern Arizona Limit Motorized Access

As the winter season descends upon northern Arizona, officials from the Coconino National Forest have implemented closures on several roads to preserve their condition and ensure visitor safety. These closures, which include popular routes around Flagstaff and other areas, will remain in effect throughout the colder months.

In the Flagstaff vicinity, access to Schultz Pass, Elden Lookout, and Freidlein Prairie roads has been restricted. Other significant closures affect Schnebley Hill, Willard Springs, and Kelly Canyon roads, situated off Interstate 17. Despite the restrictions, these roads are still accessible to non-motorized traffic, allowing for continued recreational use.

“Each winter, the Coconino National Forest prohibits the use of motorized vehicles on many forest roads to protect the roads from damage, and to reduce the risk of stranded forest visitors,” stated Coconino National Forest officials. This measure is crucial in maintaining the integrity of these roads during the harsh winter conditions.

The public is advised to respect all signage indicating road closures and to avoid driving on roads that are saturated with moisture. Officials emphasize the necessity of understanding the beginning and end points of roads due to varying elevations. For instance, a road like Schnebly Hill may start in arid conditions but end in areas covered with deep snow.

A comprehensive list of road closures can be found on the Coconino National Forest’s website.
