In a significant development, a Coconino County grand jury has issued a 21-count indictment against Ochra Manakaja, a 31-year-old resident of Flagstaff, who is accused of killing her young child. This case has brought considerable attention to the area, highlighting the justice system’s role in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

The charges against Manakaja are grave, including one count of first-degree felony murder and one count of second-degree murder. Additionally, she faces two counts of child abuse that could result in death or severe injury, 16 counts of child abuse not expected to cause such outcomes, and one count related to the abandonment or concealment of a body.

County Attorney Ammon Barker emphasized the significance of the case, stating, “One of the most important responsibilities of the criminal justice system is protecting vulnerable members of our community, especially children. We recognize the profound impact of this case and will continue to pursue this matter with the seriousness and care it deserves.”

The tragic incident came to light on May 17, when authorities discovered the body of the 16-month-old at the La Quinta Inn located in east Flagstaff. Manakaja’s two other children, aged 7 and 9, were also present but were found unharmed physically.

According to court records, Manakaja admitted to the police that she had caused her toddler’s death and acknowledged that she kept the child’s body in a freezer for two weeks. She reportedly contacted emergency services from the hotel on a Sunday, confessing to the act.

Details from the filing reveal that Manakaja threw the child into his crib for crying and did not seek medical attention as his condition deteriorated, leading to his death.

Current information regarding her arraignment on these charges has not been disclosed by officials. Manakaja remains detained in the Coconino County jail, with her bail set at $1 million in cash.
