Consultants Linked to Alleged Financial Scheme Hired by John James’ PAC
John James, a Republican Representative, has come under scrutiny as his political action committee, Mission Michigan PAC, employed consultants accused of facilitating an illicit arrangement between former President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
This controversial hiring decision occurred after significant media coverage of the alleged misconduct, which could undermine James’ campaign promise to combat corruption, should he win the Michigan gubernatorial race this year.
The intricacies of this alleged scheme involve a network of Republican consulting firms, questionable shell companies, and campaign finance filings.
Recently, Mission Michigan PAC disbursed $1.3 million to Red Eagle Media Group, a Virginia-based company specializing in television and radio advertisement placements for political campaigns.
In 2016, Red Eagle Media Group was employed by the NRA to run ads in Norfolk, VA, promoting Trump’s presidential bid. During the same period, Trump also aired ads in the same market via American Media & Advocacy Group (AMAG), targeting a demographic of adults aged 35 to 65.
An investigation by The Trace in 2018 unveiled that both Red Eagle Media Group and AMAG were subsidiaries of National Media Research, Planning and Placement. Documents reveal shared resources, including addresses and personnel, across these entities.
Further discovery highlighted that the same person authorized both 2016 ad campaigns, raising suspicions of collusion between Red Eagle Media Group and the Trump campaign to align strategies with the NRA. Such collaboration is prohibited under federal law.
“This is very strong evidence, if not proof, of illegal coordination,” stated Larry Noble, a former general counsel for the Federal Election Commission, in an interview with Mother Jones. “This is the heat of the general election, and the same person is acting as an agent for the NRA and the Trump campaign.”
Trump’s 2020 campaign also engaged AMAG but ceased direct payment reports when news of the alleged deal emerged. OpenSecrets later discovered the campaign continued utilizing AMAG through intermediaries, obscuring financial trails from public scrutiny.
James’ campaign platform emphasizes eradicating political corruption, pledging to enforce ethics clauses across all employment agreements within his potential administration. However, this standard doesn’t seem to extend to his PAC.
James is among five Republican candidates vying in the August 4 primary for the gubernatorial position. The victor is expected to challenge Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the general election.
