Senators Introduce New Bill to Regulate ICE Use of Force
In a move aimed at introducing stricter oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego have proposed new legislation. This initiative comes as Congress engages in a broader conversation about the operation and monitoring of ICE.
The urgency of this discussion is underscored by recent incidents, where four individuals were either injured or killed in ICE-related shootings this month. Among these was the tragic case of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen who lost her life in Minneapolis when an ICE agent fired into her vehicle.
The proposed Stop Excessive Force in Immigration Act seeks to establish a definitive standard for the use of force by ICE agents, specifically limiting deadly force and firearm usage. Additionally, the legislation mandates the wearing of body cameras by agents and aims to reduce the use of masks.
Notably, under the Biden administration, a policy was implemented requiring Border Patrol agents in Arizona and several other states to use body cameras. While a similar House bill was introduced in 2021 to extend this requirement to both border and immigration agents, it has not advanced.
