North Carolina’s Push for Economic Growth: Infrastructure and Industrial Development
In Enfield, North Carolina, a significant initiative is underway aimed at boosting industrial development across the state. As Governor Josh Stein visited the US 301 Industrial Site, he emphasized the role of the Selectsite Readiness Program in preparing industrial locations for incoming businesses. This effort has earned North Carolina the title of 2025 State of the Year from Business Facilities Magazine.
“The Selectsite program supports grading, clearing, infrastructure, and engineering improvements – all components that make a site ready for business,” said Governor Josh Stein. He highlighted the advantages of Enfield’s infrastructure, including its proximity to major transportation routes and deepwater ports, making it an attractive site for advanced manufacturing companies. “We’re turning dirt into jobs all across the state by creating the conditions companies need to succeed,” he added.
The program, established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2023, targets the preparation of mid-sized industrial properties for significant projects. Halifax County, one of the 15 designated Selectsites, has secured a $3 million grant to develop its facilities, supported by a $2.35 million contribution from the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and $650,000 in matching funds from the NC Department of Transportation.
NCDOT’s involvement includes plans to upgrade Trestle Road, ensuring improved access to the site by paving and extending it to accommodate larger vehicle traffic. “Access to good roads is one of the top factors industries consider when deciding where to locate,” stated State Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Halifax County to enhance the region’s appeal to businesses offering well-paying jobs.
Representative Rodney Pierce also voiced support, stating, “This investment makes it clear that Halifax County and District 27 is open for business. By preparing sites like this one, we’re positioning this region to keep competing for new opportunities and long-term growth.”
Award-Winning Economic Strategies
North Carolina’s economic strategies have gained national recognition, with the state named 2025 State of the Year by Business Facilities Magazine. Governor Stein cited the state’s record-breaking achievements in attracting jobs and investments, marking 2025 as a landmark year for economic development. “This recognition underscores the progress North Carolina is making to build a strong, resilient economy that works for all parts of our state,” he remarked.
The state’s robust business climate has consistently won accolades, including being ranked Top State for Business by CNBC and recognized for its workforce development efforts. Site Selection Magazine also highlighted North Carolina’s efforts by naming it the 2026 Top State for Workforce Development. A notable development is Johnson & Johnson’s expansion, contributing up to 500 jobs and a $2 billion investment.
Under Governor Stein’s leadership since January 2025, the North Carolina Department of Commerce has funneled more than $3 million into regional investments, supporting infrastructure and economic vitality through programs like the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission and RIA Utility Account awards.
