Lawler’s Voting Record Questioned Amidst Claims of Bipartisanship

New York Representative Mike Lawler’s record of aligning with former President Donald Trump’s policies has been put under scrutiny by two recent studies. The analyses indicate that Lawler’s support for Trump’s agenda was unwavering throughout the previous year, casting doubt on his self-proclaimed bipartisan stance.

The studies, conducted by CAP Action and the nonpartisan VoteHub, evaluated congressional voting patterns on key legislation during 2025. These bills were ones where the Trump administration had expressed a definitive position.

Lawler’s alignment with Trump included backing contentious measures like the Rescissions Act, which slashed federal funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, projected to remove 7.8 million people from Medicaid by 2034.

Despite these findings, Lawler continues to assert his moderate credentials. Representing New York’s 17th District, a politically diverse area, Lawler’s campaign highlights his “bipartisan, pragmatic approach to governing” as a reason for his electoral success.

In recent developments, Lawler publicly criticized former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, attributing her limited congressional achievements to her “inability to work across party lines.” Yet, both CAP Action and VoteHub revealed that Greene’s support for Trump’s agenda was less frequent than Lawler’s.

Further analysis by VoteView showed an increase in Lawler’s party-line voting from 81% between 2023 and 2024 to 92% since 2025, suggesting a shift towards greater partisanship with Trump’s return to influence.

As Lawler seeks a third term, Democrats have identified him as a potentially vulnerable Republican in the upcoming elections.
