As the Winter Olympics captivate audiences worldwide from Italy, closer to home, Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein are turning their attention to North Carolina’s thriving ski industry. Their visit highlights the state’s position as the renowned “Winter Sports Capital of the South.” Kicking off their journey at Appalachian Ski Mountain’s French-Swiss Ski College, the Steins are also making stops at Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts.

The winter sports sector in North Carolina stands as a significant economic driver, contributing over $244 million annually and drawing more than 780,000 visitors to its six ski resorts. This popularity is a testament to the state’s appeal, offering a robust platform for both first-time and seasoned skiers.

Governor Josh Stein encourages tourism to Western North Carolina.

“Western North Carolina is open for business, and thousands of people are choosing our state as their vacation destination,” Governor Josh Stein remarked. “The ski industry is a key part of western North Carolina’s economy, supporting jobs and small businesses alike. I encourage everyone to rediscover the unforgettable mountains of North Carolina for your next vacation destination, no matter the season.”

Kimberley Jochl of the North Carolina Ski Area Association highlighted, “North Carolina’s ski industry has never been so vibrant, and the time has never been better to head over to the mountains for a winter escape. North Carolina’s leadership as the Winter Sports Capital of the South attracts hundreds of thousands each year, one-third being first-time skiers.” With enhancements across the resorts, the season promises a delightful experience for all winter sports enthusiasts.

Echoing this sentiment, Wit Tuttell, Executive Director of Visit NC, noted, “With the highest mountains, the biggest variety of activities and the best instruction for beginners, our ski areas have helped make North Carolina the winter sports capital of the South. Each year, it’s exciting to see the mountain landscapes extend their appeal with new developments on and off the slopes.”

Brad Moretz, President of Appalachian Ski Mountain, expressed satisfaction with the current state of affairs: “We are pleased that Governor Stein is getting the word out that North Carolina Ski Resorts and our local supporting lodging and restaurant businesses are fully back on track following the 2024 Hurricane Helene event, and are currently enjoying a strong winter.”

In addition to promoting the ski industry, Governor Stein celebrated North Carolina athletes competing in the Olympics and Paralympics in Italy, including Eunice Lee in speedskating, Mystique Ro in skeleton, and Kayden Beasley in sled hockey. Moreover, five athletes from the Carolina Hurricanes are representing their countries in men’s ice hockey.

For over six decades, North Carolina has been a beacon for winter sports enthusiasts, offering year-round recreation. Its six ski resorts, nestled near Asheville and Boone, capitalize on the region’s impressive mountain ranges, with peaks exceeding 5,000 feet. The snow sports industry not only fuels local economies but also creates significant indirect economic benefits statewide.
