The search for a new University of Montana president has attracted over 60 applicants, according to a spokesperson for the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education. “We do not have an exact count at this time, as several applications are still being completed and additional submissions are expected,” said spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner Galen Hollenbaugh in an email earlier this week.

Former UM President Seth Bodnar announced his resignation in January to pursue other public service roles. On the final day of filing, he revealed his candidacy as an independent for the U.S. Senate, challenging Republican incumbent Steve Daines.

Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian stated he would follow an expedited process for the appointment, with guidance from AGB Search, a firm experienced in executive searches within the Montana University System. He has been issuing brief updates on a dedicated website, noting the candidate pool is “strong and diverse.”

A small working group has been formed to assist Christian in vetting candidates, comprising:

  • Community member and former Regent Joyce Dombrouski
  • Faculty Senate Chairperson Valerie Moody
  • Staff Senate President Dominic Beccari
  • Vice President of Academic Affairs John DeBoer
  • ASUM President Buddy Wilson

Hollenbaugh declined to provide details on the process or the working group’s role. Christian expects to appoint a new president within one to three months, potentially by early this month.
