In a surprising twist in U.S. political dynamics, billionaire Elon Musk reportedly has a substantial outstanding financial commitment to former president Donald Trump. Musk still owes Trump a staggering $100 million of the $300 million he pledged to support Trump’s election efforts, highlighting potential strains in their once high-profile relationship.

The Wall Street Journal reported that this financial delay marks a potential rift between Musk and Trump, with advisors noting the absence of the promised $100 million payment. Once allies, the relationship between these two prominent figures appears to be cooling.

Recently, Musk attended his own farewell celebration at the White House, sporting a mysterious black eye amidst a turbulent period involving tensions and reportedly heated confrontations.

Despite Musk and Trump’s prior intense camaraderie during and shortly after the election, the administration has increasingly needed to manage Musk’s unpredictable behavior.

Sources indicate that Musk was recently upset after learning about a meeting between Trump and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a figure Musk reportedly despises. The meeting’s delay was an attempt to soothe Musk’s frustrations, and Altman eventually did not join a planned public event with Trump, as WSJ reports.

Musk has expressed dissatisfaction with Washington’s reception to his budget-cutting proposals, while Trump aides have teased him for his perceived immaturity.

According to the WSJ, Musk’s autonomous actions at the Department of Government Efficiency led to the necessity of appointing him a so-called babysitter, as President Trump sought more oversight over Musk’s actions. Episodes of discord, such as Musk’s anger over proposed tariffs deemed detrimental to the global economy, have been frequent.

Musk criticized Trump’s contentious “big, beautiful bill,” warning it unnecessarily increased the national debt and contradicted the department’s objectives, stating to CBS News that it undermined the DOGE team’s efforts.

Musk decreased his White House visits, attending only occasionally, which further signaled a potential end to their collaboration.

As Musk begins to regroup, Tesla is experiencing significant declines in sales and revenues, largely blamed on his controversial political stances and aggressive federal cutbacks.

In contrast, Trump publicly insists their partnership remains intact: “Elon is not really leaving,” he remarked at Musk’s farewell, adding, “He’s going to be back and forth.”

However, Musk’s ambitious pledge to cut $2 trillion from government spending remains unfulfilled, with Trump privately questioning its feasibility and impact, as cited by the WSJ: “Was it all bullsh*t?”
