Jeremiah Shinn has been appointed as the next president of the University of Montana, following a unanimous decision by the Montana Board of Regents. Shinn, currently interim president at Boise State University, will assume his new role at UM on July 1. Board Chairperson Todd Buchanan praised Shinn’s extensive background in educational leadership and student affairs, expressing confidence in his ability to elevate UM’s standing.
Buchanan remarked, “The enthusiasm I personally feel about this next chapter at the University of Montana is extremely high, and we’re very excited about welcoming Dr. Shinn and his wife back into Montana.” Over 70 applicants vied for the position, but Shinn emerged as the standout candidate in the expedited search process. The Board set his annual salary at $467,197, with an additional deferred compensation of $76,875.
Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian highlighted Shinn’s consistent dedication to student success, noting he “consistently rose to the top.” The expedited search was initiated after former UM President Seth Bodnar resigned to pursue a U.S. Senate run. Christian emphasized the importance of a swift appointment to maintain UM’s strategic growth.
Christian shared that Shinn received unanimous backing from the presidential search advisory group. He was the sole finalist presented for final evaluation, reflecting a shift in the hiring process for university presidents. Christian stated the evaluation of candidates was thorough, reinforcing Shinn’s selection.
UM student and Regent Carter Jasper expressed enthusiasm about Shinn’s leadership, noting, “Dr. Shinn is an excellent candidate and will be an excellent leader for the University of Montana.”
