Potential Power Outages Announced in Flagstaff Area Due to Wildfire Concerns

Residents in the Flagstaff region of Arizona are being alerted to potential power outages as Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) takes precautionary measures against wildfire risks. The utility company is considering a temporary shutdown starting Wednesday, April 22, in specific high fire-risk communities.

Communities that might be affected include Doney Park, Timberline, Fernwood, Mormon Lake, Cosnino, Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, and Valle. Approximately 5,800 customers could be impacted by this preventive measure.

APS explained that these shutdowns aim to prevent their electrical equipment from igniting or exacerbating any wildfires. “APS will do everything it can to minimize disruptions to customers while prioritizing safety,” company representatives stated in a press release.

Residents are being notified through their preferred communication methods as designated in their APS accounts. The company also indicated that the planned outages might be canceled if weather conditions improve.

For real-time updates, customers are encouraged to check the APS Outage Map. Restoration efforts could be delayed if adverse weather conditions result in damage to power lines and equipment.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings about critical fire weather conditions expected on Wednesday across northern and central Arizona. Forecasts include wind gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour, with even stronger localized winds in some areas.

Additionally, single-digit humidity levels are predicted for much of northeastern Arizona. A red flag warning is in effect throughout the day for the Navajo Nation and Little Colorado River Valley due to these conditions.

Meteorologists caution that these dry and windy conditions could lead to the easy ignition and rapid spread of fires, both new and existing. Breezy weather is expected to continue throughout the week, with potential showers and thunderstorms anticipated over the weekend.

In other news, Coconino County Health and Human Services has confirmed two new measles cases as of Friday, with possible exposure sites identified in Fredonia and Kanab, Utah.
