Flagstaff City Council Renames Columbus Avenue to Extend Switzer Canyon Drive

The Flagstaff City Council has decided to rename Columbus Avenue, a move that reflects both cultural sensitivity and practical street planning. The renamed section will now extend Switzer Canyon Drive from the intersection at San Francisco Street to Humphreys Street.

This renaming initiative was proposed by students from the Native American Club at Flagstaff High School and Kinsey Elementary School, who raised concerns regarding Christopher Columbus’ historical impact on Indigenous communities. Their concerns about Columbus’ role in violence and disruption were key factors in the council’s decision.

City officials also noted that the renaming would aid in improving continuity for both drivers and emergency responders, making navigation more seamless across the city.

Switzer Canyon Drive is named after William Howard “Billy” Switzer, a notable figure whose family settled in the area in the late 1800s. Switzer, who passed away in 1967, was a former city council member and a local businessman.

In addition to extending Switzer Canyon Drive, the street will receive an honorary designation of “Hózhó Way,” a Navajo term that signifies a philosophy of life that seeks beauty and balance.

The next steps involve notifying the residents affected by this change and updating all related maps, signs, and official documents. According to documents presented to the council, the estimated cost for these changes is approximately $11,350, covering materials, labor, and new signage.
