Gabriela Lena Frank, 2026 Pulitzer Prize winner for Music, attributes her success to the influential mentors at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The renowned pianist’s award-winning symphony, “Picaflor: A Future Myth,” debuted on March 13, 2025. This modern symphony, inspired by Frank’s Peruvian heritage and the California wildfires, was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and led by conductor Marin Alsop.

Frank earned her doctorate in musical composition in 2001 under the guidance of SMTD faculty William Bolcom, Logan Skelton, and Leslie Bassett. Joining the ranks of Bolcom and Bassett, both Pulitzer winners, Frank credits her mentors for fostering her exploration of Peruvian culture. “They encouraged my travel to Peru, which began during my grad school years at Michigan,” Frank stated.

Continuing her mentors’ legacy, Frank founded the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music in 2017, offering emerging composers opportunities to work with celebrated performers. That year, she was also named one of the 35 most significant women composers in history by The Washington Post. In 2020, Frank received the Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities, recognizing her efforts to break barriers in classical music and her advocacy for diverse composers.

Future Myth

Frank’s composition, “Picaflor,” reimagines the Andean Peruvian myth of Picaflor, a heroic hummingbird on a mission to save Pachamama from ecological disaster. Her music often draws from Latin American folklore, blending poetry, mythology, and indigenous styles with classical frameworks. Frank’s recent works increasingly focus on climate change activism, a shift influenced by her personal experiences with California wildfires. “My viewpoint of a fragile future came much later,” she remarked.

“Picaflor” reflects Frank’s desire for cultural mythologies to evolve in response to urgent global challenges. Frank expressed, “The Picaflor, the small hummingbird at the center of my piece, shows us we can be selfless and courageous. I hope my audience feels both the urgency and opportunity for a renewed future if we are brave enough.” Despite her wariness of major prizes, Frank appreciates the Pulitzer’s impact. “The Picaflor and I are very grateful,” she said.

Theme and Variations

Frank’s illustrious career includes commissions from the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, and other leading orchestras. Her works have been performed by renowned artists such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and soprano Dawn Upshaw. In May and June 2026, her opera “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” was showcased at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
