Obama Center Opens with Stars, Music, and Presidential Guests

The Obama Presidential Center, a project nearly ten years in the making, celebrated its grand opening with a host of celebrities, musical performances, and the presence of four former U.S. presidents, including Barack Obama himself.

The inauguration was attended by “global leaders, artists, changemakers, and citizens,” and featured performances from renowned musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, and John Legend. The event culminated with a rendition of “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder, Springsteen, Legend, rapper Common, and U2’s Bono, among other stars.

Emphasizing a forward-looking vision, Obama clarified that the center is not intended to serve as a nostalgic reminder of the past. “The exhibits in the center are not meant to evoke nostalgia for some gauzy bygone era, some unattainable past that we can dream about and say ‘oh we miss you Barack’,” he stated.

All living former presidents, except Donald Trump, were present. Valerie Jarrett, a former Obama aide and current CEO of the Obama Foundation, mentioned during a press preview that Trump was welcome to visit, although he was not invited to the dedication. “I can tell you that this is a celebration for those who helped get President Obama where he is. And this is a gift to them,” she explained.

Despite Trump’s absence, the event included subtle references to the future of democracy and American ideals. Former First Lady Michelle Obama highlighted her husband’s achievements in office, noting, “You were doing the people’s work, rescuing our economy, expanding healthcare, ending a war, ordering the Bin Ladin raid, saving an auto industry,” before adding with emphasis, “winning a peace prize.” The comment drew laughter from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, indirectly referencing Trump’s well-known desire for a Nobel Peace Prize, which Obama received in 2009.

Obama expressed his aspirations for the center’s impact on future generations, stating, “I hope this center will serve as an affirmation of just how special, how precious, our democracy truly is.”

The center occupies over 19 acres on the south side of Chicago and aims to inspire change and hope. It offers a glimpse into life during the Obama administration, while also featuring a branch of the Chicago Public Library, an NBA regulation-size basketball court, and a Women’s Garden dedicated to female leaders in Chicago.

In addition, the campus includes an auditorium, a media suite for visitor use, a Wetland Walk, a fruit and vegetable garden, and a playground. However, it is not a traditional presidential library and does not house official documents, which are stored digitally by the National Archives. Some records and artifacts are displayed in the museum on a loan basis.
