As America gears up for its 250th anniversary, the University of Michigan is commemorating this significant milestone with a series of events and activities. These initiatives invite reflection on the nation’s democratic journey. The U.S. at 250 program, a collaboration between the Initiative for Democracy and Civic Empowerment, the William L. Clements Library, and the U-M Arts Initiative, encourages the community to engage in discussions about American democracy’s inception in 1776.
Guided by Jenna Bednar, Paul Erickson, and Mark Clague, the program offers opportunities to reflect on democracy’s past, present, and future. Bednar, co-chair of the Look to Michigan vision campaign’s Year of Democracy, Civic Empowerment, and Global Engagement, emphasizes the importance of reassessing America’s founding ideals to expand them for future generations.
To highlight its impact, U-M is placing advertisements in major publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, showcasing its contributions to human health, technology, and education. A series of seven ads will run in Michigan through early July, with special editions in national papers on July 3 and 4.
Declaration public reading
On July 8, the U.S. at 250 will host a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at 6 p.m. on the Diag, coinciding with America250MI’s statewide initiative. This event includes music and free popsicles, beginning at 5:45 p.m. The Clements Library, known for its extensive Revolutionary War collections, previously hosted an exhibit on Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense,” a pivotal document in the fight for independence.
Art at work
The U.S. at 250 Community Quilt Workshop produced a quilt featuring words like “Love” and “Empathy,” which will be on display across campus locations. Additionally, a sticker contest resulted in designs by students Cole Dorman, Ashini Shah, and Mia Echlin, distributed at events. Clague highlights art’s role in fostering democratic engagement, noting its power to inspire reflection on citizenship.
Upcoming events
The U.S. at 250 grant program allocated $100,000 for exhibits, events, and projects. Notable upcoming events include:
- “Common Ground: This Land, Our Future,” late September, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, with discussions on land stewardship.
- “U-M Press 250th Anniversary Exhibit and Catalog,” fall, Shapiro Library Gallery, showcasing U-M Press’s historical publications.
- “U.S. at 250 Scavenger Hunt,” starting Sept. 14, offering clues to exhibits and plush keychain giveaways.
Reflecting on democracy’s path, Bednar notes the university’s unique position to explore its successes and challenges, urging a collective move toward a better future.
