DOJ Deploys Election Monitors Across Key States Amid Upcoming Primaries
The U.S. Department of Justice has announced the deployment of “elections monitors” to several states, including Arizona, as the summer primary elections approach. The initiative is part of routine measures to ensure electoral integrity, according to Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General of the DOJ Civil Rights Division.
Dhillon clarified in a recent video that the deployment is not a new practice. The DOJ has consistently sent monitors to various states, including four counties in Arizona during 2024, under the Biden administration. At that time, the monitors were tasked with ensuring compliance with federal civil rights laws, without any indication of alleged fraud.
The current operation aims to bolster voter confidence and address potential election issues. Dhillon emphasized the importance of ensuring polling places function correctly, mentioning that specific counties in Arizona, such as Maricopa, Apache, and Pima, will receive attention. Dhillon confirmed these details on Thursday.
In addition to Arizona, other states receiving monitors include Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Virginia. These states have scheduled their primary elections for the summer. Notably, Michigan and New Hampshire are identified as swing states, while the remaining four are traditionally Democratic strongholds.
Dhillon, who has previously endorsed former President Donald Trump’s unfounded claims regarding the 2020 election results, indicated that some jurisdictions have had historical issues. She also mentioned plans for a broader monitoring program as the general election nears.
The decision to deploy monitors follows Dhillon’s promise to take legal action against local election officials if noncitizens are discovered on voter rolls. This pledge aligns with the DOJ’s previous request for Arizona to provide voter information from all 50 states, a request that Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes refused. A federal judge supported Fontes’ decision, though the DOJ is appealing.
Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs of Arizona has expressed vigilance concerning potential federal interference. “We’re going to be watching this very closely and we’re working closely with election officials across the state to ensure that our elections are secure,” she stated on Thursday.
The DOJ’s actions highlight ongoing concerns about election security and federal oversight, as the nation prepares for future electoral contests.
