Chris Shea’s Stances on Iran War and Medicaid Draw Scrutiny
In a recent interview with WTIC radio, Republican congressional candidate Chris Shea expressed support for several controversial policies, including an endorsement for the Iran conflict and advocating for permanent reductions to Medicaid.
Shea, a firefighter, is campaigning for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District, a region encompassing parts of Hartford and New Haven counties. Should he secure victory in the August 11 primary, he will challenge Democratic Representative Jahana Hayes.
Aligning closely with former President Donald Trump, Shea declared Trump as “our boss” and emphasized the necessity for House Republicans to unify under his leadership. Shea also urged voters experiencing difficulties in the current economic climate to remain patient, attributing the struggles to the previous administration.
“We were handed a really bad economy from the Biden administration, something that Kamala supported wholeheartedly,” Shea stated. “We are seeing improvements, but we’re an impatient bunch, and we need to stand behind those policies and continually point out how we’re headed in the right direction.”
However, a Pew Research Center poll indicates that voter concerns regarding affordability remain prevalent. The poll revealed a split opinion on which political party could better manage the economy, marking a shift from the longstanding Republican advantage on the issue (source).
Shea’s allegiance to Trump is further illustrated by his support for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This 2025 legislation proposes removing 12 million Americans from Medicaid to finance tax cuts for the affluent. Shea criticized Rep. Hayes for opposing the law and pledged to work towards making these changes permanent if elected.
According to a Politico poll, awareness of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is limited, with only half of voters familiar with it, and those familiar expressing concerns that it primarily benefits the wealthy (source).
In discussing the military engagement with Iran, Shea praised the actions taken, describing them as overdue.
“What I will say is it’s about time,” Shea commented. “This is, you know, while not a declared war, that country has been at war with us for 47-plus years, and we finally have a leader that was willing to take the actions that the military has known we’ve needed to take forever.”
Despite Shea’s support, public opinion appears divided on the issue. Aggregated polling data from The Silver Bulletin indicates that nearly 60% of Americans oppose military action in Iran, with 18 U.S. servicemembers reported dead in the ongoing conflict.
Shea has garnered support from several congressional Republicans, though he has yet to receive an endorsement from Trump.
