Phoenix Renames Cesar Chavez Park to Aguila Park Amid Controversy

The city of Phoenix has undertaken a significant change in its park names, reflecting community preferences and addressing recent controversies. The park formerly known as Cesar Chavez Park will now bear the name Aguila Park, following a community-led survey that selected the new designation.

Aguila Park emerged as the preferred choice from a community survey conducted to rename the park located at 35th Avenue and Baseline Road in south Phoenix. However, city officials have not yet announced when the park’s signage will be updated to reflect the new name.

This decision follows the Phoenix City Council’s directive to remove Cesar Chavez’s name from all public streets and facilities. The move was prompted by allegations against the labor icon, accusing him of sexual assault against minors and a fellow organizer.

Metro Phoenix Locations Formerly Named After Cesar Chavez

Several locations in the Phoenix area previously honored Cesar Chavez, ranging from community centers to public plazas. These spaces are now undergoing changes to their names and signage. The decision reflects both community input and the city council’s recent actions in light of the allegations against Chavez.

Images of these locations, including the Cesar Chavez Community Center and Library in Laveen, as well as Cesar Chavez High School, capture the essence of these community landmarks prior to any changes being implemented.
