With 34 games left in the regular season, the Arizona Diamondbacks are locked in a heated playoff push, striving to maintain focus and secure a postseason berth for the first time since 2023. However, the unexpected actions of Ketel Marte have posed a significant challenge.
Following Marte’s sudden vanishing act during a trip to Boston, the Diamondbacks are grappling with how to proceed after a key player’s unexplained absence during a pivotal period in their season.
“Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated,” explained manager Torey Lovullo. “I felt betrayed. And that’s a whole different type of pain and frustration. But I’m through that.”
Marte and Team Leadership Convene
On Thursday, Marte met with Lovullo, general manager Mike Hazen, and his agent. Subsequently, the 32-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left knee inflammation.
While Lovullo refrained from disclosing many specifics, he acknowledged Marte’s frustration over his knee issues. Despite being slated as the designated hitter on Monday, Marte did not appear.
Marte, who boasts a .249 average with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season, was absent from the clubhouse during media sessions on Friday.
“There’s right ways to handle things and wrong ways to handle things,” Lovullo stated. “I think the conclusion that was drawn up yesterday was that we could have been better. Ketel could have been better, specifically. Admittedly so.”
“I want to manage baseball games. I want to do what I love doing between the white lines and not have to answer these types of questions. … I don’t love the drama that follows this ballclub. I want to be a good baseball team and we’ve got to figure this out.”
Marte’s tenure with the team, along with his impressive stats of 1,215 hits and 189 homers since 2017, makes him a valuable player. He remains under contract through 2030, with a player option for 2031.
“I love Ketel Marte — my relationship with him is not going to change,” said Lovullo.
However, Marte’s erratic behavior presents a dilemma for the franchise.
This incident is not without precedent. Last year, Marte missed three games after his Arizona home was burglarized during the All-Star break, prompting him to fly back to the Dominican Republic. He later apologized for his absence.
Teammates Await Clarity
Many Diamondbacks players remain in the dark about Marte’s latest absence, relying on media reports for information.
Reliever Kevin Ginkel expressed disappointment but also concern for Marte’s well-being, both physically and mentally.
“There’s really no explanation for it,” Ginkel commented. “But we’ve got 30-something games left and hopefully we can get him back and it’ll give us a nice little push into the playoffs.”
Ginkel noted the team’s interest in hearing Marte’s perspective, though it’s uncertain when that might happen.
“I think it’d be nice to hear it — for sure,” Ginkel added. “I think a lot of players are kind of frustrated about how it happened. But first and foremost, it’s him getting his knee right and mentally being in a good place to where he can come back and help contribute.”
