Fatal Collision in Grand Rapids During ICE Pursuit

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday in Grand Rapids, as a driver perished in a vehicle crash while allegedly evading Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities. The accident took place on the city’s Southwest side at the intersection of Century Ave SW and McKendrick Street SW.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD), the vehicle involved in the incident collided with a tree and subsequently burst into flames, resulting in the driver’s death. The GRPD released a statement on Tuesday afternoon, clarifying that the driver was fleeing from immigration officials when the crash occurred.

The department noted, “GRPD’s traffic unit investigators are limited in their ability to gather information from federal agents about events preceding the crash.” They emphasized that the local police had no prior knowledge of the situation until they were summoned to the crash scene.

In light of the circumstances, GRPD Chief Joe Trigg has sought assistance from the Michigan State Police (MSP) to aid in the ongoing investigation. The MSP has confirmed its involvement to Michigan Public.
