Kamala Harris Backs Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan Senate Race
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has thrown her support behind Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan U.S. Senate race, marking a significant endorsement for the candidate. The two appeared together at a roundtable event at Birth Detroit, a facility dedicated to maternal and infant health, underscoring El-Sayed’s commitment to healthcare issues.
During the event, Harris expressed confidence in El-Sayed’s leadership, stating, “I’m here to support Dr. El Sayed because, on this subject, I know he will be a champion.” El-Sayed, who previously served as the health department director for Detroit and Wayne County, has been recognized for his focus on public health.
This endorsement comes amid efforts to mend divisions within the Democratic Party over U.S. policy on Israel and Gaza. Harris faced criticism from some Michigan Arab and Muslim voters during her presidential campaign for her stance on Israeli military actions. El-Sayed, although initially critical, ultimately supported Harris once she secured the Democratic nomination. Reflecting on his decision, he remarked, “I understood that she would be the better option, and that’s why I endorsed her.”
El-Sayed’s campaign may benefit from Harris’s endorsement, potentially strengthening his appeal among Black voters in Detroit, who largely supported his primary opponent, Congresswoman Haley Stevens. El-Sayed noted that some voters have expressed regrets over their past voting decisions, particularly in the 2020 election, and emphasized the importance of forward-thinking in future elections.
Addressing ongoing concerns about the Democratic Party’s stance on Gaza, El-Sayed encouraged voters who share his views to unify and support candidates aligned with their positions. “If you are somebody who is angry about our party’s position on Gaza, then I think it’s important for us to build a coalition to elect a U.S. senator who agrees with you on that position,” he stated.
Meanwhile, El-Sayed’s Republican rival, former Congressman Mike Rogers, dismissed the endorsement as “desperate” and criticized Harris’s performance during the current administration. The endorsement signals a strategic move in a closely watched Senate race, with both parties vying for influence in the critical swing state of Michigan.
