Scottsdale School District Explores Limits on Classroom Screen Time

As digital tools become increasingly woven into educational resources, the Scottsdale Unified School District is contemplating a new policy to manage students’ screen time in classrooms. This initiative aims to foster more face-to-face interaction among students and decrease dependency on technology in educational settings.

Lea Mitchell, the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, highlighted a significant challenge: the integration of current textbooks with online resources. “Right now, our core instructional resources, 80% of the time which we want used, are publishers post-pandemic have threaded the product so intricately together that pulling it apart would be very difficult,” Mitchell explained.

To address this issue, Mitchell suggested that collaboration with other districts might be necessary to wield enough purchasing power to influence publishers. The goal is to find a balance where students are proficient with technology without becoming overly dependent on it.

“Because as much as I’ve heard and sat with families who are like ‘please get it out of here,’ I’ve heard from families that are like, ‘why doesn’t my kid know how to do these things when they leave?”‘ Mitchell noted, underscoring the diverse perspectives among parents in the district.

According to a district spokesperson, there is no set timeline for implementing a screen time policy. However, it is anticipated that any changes would be decided by the second semester and potentially take effect in the following academic year.
