Emergency Rooftop Rescues in Sedona Amid Flash Flooding

As flash floods inundate Sedona, Arizona, state emergency crews have been actively engaged in rooftop rescues to save residents trapped in their homes. Governor Katie Hobbs’ office announced that six such evacuations had been completed by Sunday afternoon.

Governor Hobbs is prioritizing the safety of communities in the affected areas. “Governor Hobbs’ top priority is keeping communities safe. The governor is closely monitoring the flooding in Oak Creek, and encourages residents to follow guidance from local authorities,” stated Liliana Soto, the governor’s press secretary, in a communication with KNAU.

The Department of Public Safety Air Rescue teams are on standby, prepared to conduct further rescues as needed. The operations have been ongoing as of early Sunday afternoon, and teams continue to assist Sedona’s residents.

Additionally, the Department of Transportation is on the ground, working to remove debris, while the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA) has activated the State Emergency Operations Center at a remote level 2 to coordinate the response efforts.

The Emergency Operations Center is actively coordinating with local communities to assess resource needs and handle incoming requests for assistance. Despite the severe conditions, Governor Hobbs’ office has not yet received an emergency declaration request from local officials. Such requests typically involve counties submitting them to DEMA, which initiates discussions about public assistance needs. If deemed necessary, DEMA can escalate the request to the governor’s office for further action, particularly if the situation significantly impacts life, safety, and public infrastructure.

In response to the rising floodwaters, Sedona city officials have mandated evacuations for residents and visitors in areas near Oak Creek, highlighting the heightened danger following heavy overnight rainfall.
