SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The college admissions process is being described as “overwhelming” by many students, including 17-year-old Alex Zaret, who is visiting multiple campuses like Skidmore College with his family. His father, Owen, mentioned the demanding nature of the process, which involves extensive research, campus visits, and applications.
Historically, colleges operated with an “ivory tower” approach, but now they are actively courting students. This shift is partly due to a decline in student numbers, prompting schools to make the admissions process more open and welcoming. Skidmore College, for example, is making significant efforts to attract students by involving faculty in the recruitment process, aiming to create a sense of belonging and engagement for prospective students.
Universities are employing strategies like waiving application fees and offering extra financial aid to those who visit campuses. Some public universities and over 150 private colleges now extend direct admissions to applicants using the Common App. The trend shows increased acceptance rates, making it easier for students to gain college admission.
As the number of high school graduates declines, colleges are striving to maintain enrollment by encouraging faculty involvement in admissions. This initiative helps prospective students feel valued and connected to the campus. Admissions leaders are also facing challenges in predicting student enrollment, known as “yield,” as students apply to more schools than before, complicating enrollment management.
Skidmore College, along with other institutions, is taking steps to ensure that every interaction counts in the recruitment process. This includes involving everyone on campus, from faculty to staff, to create a welcoming environment. Faculty members are also meeting prospective students, with many volunteering to assist in the admissions process, recognizing the importance of maintaining strong enrollment numbers.
Despite these challenges, Skidmore has seen its application numbers rise and maintains a competitive acceptance rate. The college continues to enhance its appeal by encouraging prospective students to participate in campus life during visits, which has shown positive feedback from applicants and their families.
