Arizona Democrats Select New Leadership After Election Setbacks
In the aftermath of disappointing results in the 2024 elections, the Arizona Democratic Party has ushered in new leadership. At a recent state party meeting, Robert Branscomb was elected as the new chairman, decisively defeating the incumbent Yolanda Bejarano.
Despite Bejarano’s strong fundraising record and endorsements from top Democrats, including Governor Katie Hobbs, the party’s grassroots members voiced the need for a strategic shift after facing defeats in numerous races last November.
Branscomb, who served as vice chair during Bejarano’s tenure, advocates for prioritizing grassroots efforts over fundraising. In a debate video, Branscomb articulated, “Being chair of ADP is more than just fundraising and cutting checks to the county parties. Those things are important, yes, but they’re not the end. They’re the means to a bigger vision.” He emphasized the necessity to reconnect with the working class.
The new chairman also highlighted the importance of engaging with rural communities in Arizona and improving the party’s messaging strategy. “We let the republicans define who we are and what we’re about and let them hijack that they’re the working party for the people and that’s not true,” he stated.
The party also saw the departure of treasurer Rick McGuire amid allegations of self-dealing, as reported by the Arizona Republic. This controversy revolved around a contract McGuire secured with the Democratic Party for services beyond his treasurer duties.
Governor Hobbs, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, and Attorney General Kris Mayes expressed their gratitude to Bejarano and extended congratulations to Branscomb. In a joint statement, they expressed optimism: “Let’s look ahead to 2026 with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. The work starts now, and we look forward to working alongside the new chair and the entire Arizona Democratic Party.”
