Phoenix Union High School District Declares Campuses as Safe Zones Amid Policy Changes
In response to growing concerns within the community, the Phoenix Union High School District has unanimously passed a resolution to designate its schools as safe zones, shielding them from immigration enforcement activities. This decision comes amid rising fears among families following changes to longstanding federal policies.
The newly adopted resolution underscores the district’s commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment by barring any individuals or organizations that might disrupt the educational process. This move aligns with the district’s ongoing policy to protect its students and staff.
Recently, the Trump administration rescinded a previous U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) directive that restricted enforcement actions in sensitive locations such as schools and religious institutions. This policy rollback has heightened anxiety among families in the community.
Governing board member Francisco Pastor-Rivera emphasized, “Given this, I want to continuously make sure that our schools remain a safe zone for our students and our families so I think the wording in this particular resolution is very, very, very, clear.”
Phoenix Union governing board president, Ceyshe Napa, reiterated the district’s stance, stating, “Our students need to be on our campuses free of fear, regardless of the political climate that we find ourselves in or we find ourselves in the future.”
Furthermore, the district’s superintendent sent a letter to families, reassuring them that all campuses remain safe spaces. The message reinforced the belief that students should have the constitutional right to education regardless of their immigration status.
