Republican Ad Misrepresents Mendoza’s Statements on Tax Cuts
A recent advertisement by the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) is stirring controversy by using selective editing to misrepresent Democrat JoAnna Mendoza’s stance on tax issues. The ad suggests that Mendoza is against tax breaks for working Arizonans, while her actual comments were aimed at opposing tax cuts that favor billionaires.
CLF, a group based in Washington, D.C., is known for supporting Republican candidates for the U.S. House. Their latest focus is on Mendoza, who is challenging the current representative, Juan Ciscomani, in a highly competitive race.
The advertisement claims that “Mendoza lobbied to make your life more expensive,” and includes a clip of her stating, “there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.” This clip has also been used in a separate ad from the Ciscomani campaign.
The origins of Mendoza’s quoted remarks trace back to a 2020 online forum organized by the Democrats of Greater Tucson. In the full video, Mendoza criticizes Republican initiatives to reduce funding for social services and public schools in favor of tax breaks for wealthy individuals and large corporations. She made it clear that she opposes further tax cuts that serve only elite interests.
“We know that there have been enormous tax breaks and tax cuts for wealthy folks and for corporations,” Mendoza stated. “So moving forward, there should be no new tax cuts, no new tax credits, or sales tax exemptions.”
On the other side, Rep. Juan Ciscomani backed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which involved a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid intended to fund tax breaks benefiting the affluent. This legislation could result in up to 500,000 Arizonans losing their health insurance.
“JoAnna Mendoza is focused on lower costs and tax cuts for Arizona families, not tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations,” explained Kyle McCarthy, a spokesperson for Mendoza’s campaign.
