The state experienced a surge in temperature extremes this Sunday, leading to unprecedented energy consumption by APS customers. Air conditioners were pushed to their limits as they worked overtime to combat the heat, setting a new record for electricity demand.
During a recent earnings call for Pinnacle West, the parent company of APS, CEO Ted Geisler addressed the utility’s response to the challenging weather conditions.
“On Aug. 2, we reached a new all-time peak demand record of 9,164 megawatts, exceeding last year’s record by more than 500 megawatts. This record is a clear signal of the growth underway in our service territory, and our performance this summer demonstrates we’re ready for it,” Geisler stated.
This latest demand milestone surpassed the previous high, which was set on July 24 earlier this year, by 111 megawatts.
The recorded demand accounted for approximately 91% of APS’s overall capacity, as detailed in this Arizona Corporation Commission press release.
