Arizona Congressman Criticizes Multi-Billion Dollar Fund Linked to Trump Settlement

In a surprising twist of political dynamics, Arizona’s Democratic Representative Greg Stanton found common ground with some Republican senators over the controversy surrounding a large fund linked to a settlement involving former President Donald Trump. This fund, with a staggering allocation of $1.776 billion, was established following Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS for allegedly leaking his tax returns.

The fund, described by Stanton as a “ridiculous settlement” and a “$1.776 billion slush fund,” is intended to compensate victims of what the settlement terms as “lawfare and weaponization,” potentially including those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Stanton criticized the fund, suggesting it was meant to benefit “Trump’s friends and cronies” and provide “liability protection for he and his entire family” from IRS actions.

Adding to the controversy, an addendum to the settlement, signed by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche—who has ties to Trump as both a former appointee and his personal attorney—prohibits the IRS from auditing tax claims related to Trump, his family, and his companies indefinitely.

The fund’s establishment has also faced opposition from within Trump’s own party. Certain GOP senators have voiced their objections, which resulted in a delay of an immigration enforcement funding bill this week. Stanton acknowledged the bipartisan opposition, expressing gratitude toward “strong Republicans” who are “standing up to this corruption” and supporting efforts to abolish the fund.

Further fueling the debate, a portion of the fund—reported to be $1 billion—is earmarked for Trump’s proposed ballroom project, a detail that has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
