Yuma County residents have voiced growing concerns about the environmental and community impact of using treated sewage as fertilizer on nearby lands. In response, Gov. Katie Hobbs has decided to end the state’s agreement with the company involved in this practice.
The company, AgTech LLC, had been utilizing state-leased land since 2002 to manage biosolids—treated sewage—on a large scale. This operation took place on Arizona State Trust Land, which has been a point of contention for local communities.
Persistent complaints from both local farmers and business owners highlighted issues such as unpleasant odors, significant fly infestations, and the dissemination of dust and debris linked to the biosolids spreading. These concerns prompted a closer look at AgTech’s compliance with its lease agreements.
A recent inspection by the state Land Department concluded that AgTech was not meeting the terms of its leases. Consequently, the State Land commissioner decided that continuing these contracts would not serve the best interests of the State Land Trust.
