Arizona Lawmakers Criticize State Health Report on Child Fatalities and Firearms
In a heated response to a recent state health department report, two legislators from Prescott have voiced strong objections. The Arizona Department of Health’s findings highlight firearms as a significant contributor to child fatalities in 2023, sparking controversy and debate over Second Amendment rights.
Representatives Quang Nguyen and Selina Bliss, both Republicans, have taken a stand against the report by addressing a letter to Jennie Cunico, the Arizona Department of Health Director. They accuse the department of undermining constitutional rights, stating, “We are appalled that the [report], speaking on behalf of the Arizona Department of Health Services, is actually advocating for stripping Arizonans of their Second Amendment rights in their own homes.”
The data reveals that firearms were responsible for nearly 70 child deaths in Arizona during 2023, comprising 8% of all child fatalities. Despite the lawmakers’ concerns, the report does not recommend the removal of guns from homes. Instead, it emphasizes the need for increased education regarding the risks associated with keeping firearms where children are present.
The report further highlights that the presence of guns in homes can elevate the risk of suicide among children. These findings form part of the 2023 Arizona Child Fatality Report, which was made public in November.
