Arizona Businesses on Edge as Tariff Threat Looms
Arizona’s trade relationship with Mexico is under scrutiny as new tariff threats create uncertainty. The Arizona-Mexico Commission, appointed by the governor, is closely monitoring the situation, which directly impacts the state’s commerce with its southern neighbor.
In recent months, the focus of the Commission has been on the potential impact of a proposed 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, a measure put forth by President Donald Trump. This has stirred concerns among Arizona business leaders, many of whom rely heavily on cross-border trade.
Eva Masadiego, the executive director of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, has been in discussions with various stakeholders. “Mexico is Arizona’s number one trading partner. And what that means is we depend on each other’s economy,” Masadiego stated, highlighting the deep economic ties between the regions.
The tariffs, which have faced several delays and fluctuating implementation plans, are scheduled to take effect on April 2. If enacted, the tariffs could significantly affect trade dynamics, potentially raising prices on a range of products from agriculture to automobiles, affecting consumers and businesses alike in Arizona.
