Western Water Management: Arizona Tribe’s Optimism Amidst Leadership Change

As the political landscape in the United States prepares for a shift with President-elect Donald Trump and his team gearing up to assume office, there is growing discourse around the future management of water resources in the West. Despite widespread concerns, Governor Stephen Roe Lewis of the Gila River Indian Community remains positive about the new administration’s ability to handle these critical issues.

At a significant meeting held during the annual Colorado River Water Users Association conference in Las Vegas, Lewis expressed his faith in the upcoming administration. Engaging in a sovereign dialogue with Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Chairman Manuel Heart, he stated, “I’m not worried about the next administration,” referencing the Trump administration’s previous success with the Drought Contingency Plan.

The Colorado River, a vital water source shared among seven U.S. states, Mexico, and 30 tribes, operates under agreements that are set to expire in 2026. This impending deadline raises questions about future water allocation and management strategies.

Despite Trump’s intentions to reduce spending from initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Lewis remains confident that the necessary funding for the Colorado River Basin will continue. With Republicans set to control both congressional chambers, he expressed, “I’m also not worried about Congress stepping up,” emphasizing the anticipated support for new authority and funding.

The Gila River Indian Community has notably benefited from the Biden administration’s investments in water conservation and infrastructure, securing approximately 15% of the Inflation Reduction Act’s federal funding allocated to Indian Country. This support underscores the importance of sustained investment in these areas.
