Rising Energy Demands Challenge Arizona Utilities Amid Supply Chain Struggles
Arizona is experiencing a surge in energy demand, primarily driven by the increasing needs of data centers and other large-scale industrial operations. This surge is posing significant challenges for utilities, particularly in terms of supply chain disruptions which are causing delays in project timelines.
These issues were prominently discussed during a workshop held by Arizona’s utility regulatory authority.
Matthew Robinson, who oversees transmission planning at APS, presented the utility’s decade-long strategy to the Arizona Corporation Commission. He remarked, “Some of the drivers for the date changes have been those types of supply chain delays. We’re seeing a significant supply chain lead time for large equipment like transformers.”
According to Robinson, the wait times for essential equipment, such as transformers, have extended to three to four years. Although the COVID-19 pandemic initially slowed supply chains, an APS spokesperson highlighted that the ongoing complications are largely due to the extraordinary demand faced by utilities.
Despite these challenges, Robinson affirmed APS’s commitment to completing its planned projects.
APS is not alone in facing these hurdles. A representative from SRP also informed commissioners about necessary alterations in business practices to adapt to the supply chain issues.
