Chandler Takes a Stand Against Food and Drink Tampering
In a significant move to enhance public safety, Chandler has introduced legal measures to combat the tampering of food and beverages. This comes after the Chandler City Council unanimously approved a new ordinance aimed at closing existing legal gaps.
The ordinance specifically targets individuals who attempt to use drugs or intoxicants to compromise the safety of another’s food or drink, classifying it as a Class 1 misdemeanor. Councilmember OD Harris, the driving force behind this legislation, emphasized its significance by stating, “Well, this particular ordinance addresses attempt. That’s the key word in this. So if you attempt to do this, that’s the one thing that the state law does not have. It only talks about the execution of it.”
The newly adopted local law not only identifies tampering as a city-specific offense but also encourages victims to report such incidents, ensuring them that their concerns will be seriously addressed. Harris highlighted the importance of this ordinance as Chandler continues to grow its educational institutions and student population. He expressed hopes that other cities will follow Chandler’s lead in implementing similar protective measures.
Chandler’s initiative is not isolated within the region. Nearby Tempe, for instance, has already enacted an ordinance mandating businesses to provide drink spiking test kits, underscoring a broader regional effort to enhance safety in public dining and social settings.
The Chandler ordinance is set to take effect on May 24, marking a new chapter in the city’s approach to safeguarding its residents and visitors.
