Greer Fire Update: Containment Efforts and Community Impact
As the Greer Fire continues to challenge firefighting efforts in the White Mountains, containment has reached a promising 39%. The fire, which originated on private land, has expanded to over 20,000 acres since its inception last week, prompting evacuations in Greer and Eagar.
Despite adverse weather conditions over the weekend, including strong winds and red flag warnings, fire containment lines held firm. Firefighters successfully completed critical firing operations on the southern and southwestern fronts, linking Forest Road 409 to the main blaze.
On Monday, more than 700 firefighting personnel faced difficult conditions with wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour and extremely dry weather. These challenges underscore the urgency and complexity of the ongoing firefighting efforts.
A public meeting is scheduled for Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Round Valley High School auditorium in Eagar. The meeting will also be accessible via a YouTube live stream for those unable to attend in person.
In response to the fire, officials from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests have enforced a closure of nearby areas and have imposed strict bans on open flames, including campfires, grills, and smoking.
Evacuees have access to shelters set up at the St. Johns county fairgrounds and the Alpine Community Center to provide temporary refuge and essential services.
