Arizona Utilities Face Surging Energy Demand Driven by Data Centers
In a significant development last week, Arizona’s largest utility providers reported unprecedented levels of energy consumption. Data centers, in particular, have emerged as a major contributor to this surge in demand, according to Arizona Public Service (APS).
The demand for energy from data centers reached a notable peak, accounting for nearly 7% of APS’s record-breaking usage on Friday. Specifically, these centers consumed up to 630 megawatts, which is a substantial increase of 200 megawatts compared to their usage during APS’s peak demand in 2025. This rise in data center energy consumption contributed to half of the total 400 megawatts increase in peak demand that APS recorded this year, setting a new benchmark for energy use. However, APS has not disclosed the energy consumption figures for other customer categories such as industrial users or residential customers.
Similarly, Salt River Project (SRP) also experienced a record demand on Friday, though they have not released specific data on the contribution of data centers to this increase.
