Democratic Lieutenant Governor Nominee Defends His Political Transition

The Democratic ticket for lieutenant governor features a candidate with a unique political journey, moving from a Republican past to joining Governor Katie Hobbs in her campaign. Despite this shift, the former Mesa mayor, Giles, claims there is no conflict between his past affiliations and his current political stance.

In his debut press conference with Hobbs, Giles addressed several key issues:

  • He highlighted minimal policy differences between himself and Hobbs, focusing on bipartisan priorities such as economic development, education, and public safety.
  • Giles reaffirmed his pro-life stance, even while supporting the 2024 ballot initiative that enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution.
  • He acknowledged the permanence of vouchers for private and parochial school tuition but advocated for increased public school funding.
  • He dismissed concerns about his previous Republican affiliation as a “lost cause” and irrelevant to his current political aims.

Giles also minimized the controversy surrounding transgender restroom access, referring to it as a “red herring.” During his tenure as mayor in 2021, he championed a comprehensive anti-discrimination ordinance covering public accommodations, employment, and housing, extending protections based on race, sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity.

At a press event following a campaign rally, Giles faced extensive questioning on his statewide policy positions. While Hobbs and her Republican counterparts, Andy Biggs and Sine Kerr, have significant statewide political experience, Giles has primarily served in local politics within Mesa. His appearance at the 2024 Democratic National Convention marked his foray into broader political discourse, despite his initial alignment with the GOP for its policy stances.

Giles reiterated his pro-life position yet supported Proposition 139, which established a constitutional right to abortion in Arizona, influenced by the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. He remains committed to defending the initiative, emphasizing its reflection of Arizona voters’ will and the state’s constitutional framework.

While Biggs and Kerr oppose abortion and Proposition 139, they plan to honor the voters’ decision, although Biggs co-sponsored HR 72, a federal bill that could impact Arizona’s protections if passed.

Giles supports ongoing school choice initiatives but insists on bolstering public education. He voiced his backing for Proposition 212, which seeks to regulate Empowerment Scholarship Accounts and impose a $150,000 family income cap. Giles emphasized the necessity of robust public education to ensure genuine school choice, drawing on his family’s deep ties to the teaching profession.

In related news, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that Republican lawmakers misled voters regarding the implications of an initiative reforming Empowerment Scholarship Accounts.
