Arizona Faces Federal Scrutiny Over Voter Rolls

The U.S. Department of Justice has issued a stern warning to Arizona regarding the integrity of its voter registration process. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon, sent a letter to Arizona’s Secretary of State, Adrian Fontes, emphasizing legal consequences if noncitizens are found registered to vote.

Arizona joins several states receiving similar alerts. Dhillon’s communication explicitly warns against election officials, including Fontes, potentially facing prosecution for facilitating noncitizen voting.

Dhillon requested a prompt response, asking, “Please respond to this letter within five days informing us how the state of Arizona intends to ensure it is complying with these federal laws both at the state and local level and how the Department can assist in those efforts.”

Fontes, representing the Democratic Party, defends Arizona’s current systems, stating they have the nation’s most stringent voter eligibility verification. In a public statement, he expressed his displeasure with Dhillon’s implications, calling them disrespectful to diligent election officials.

“I will stand behind every one of our county recorders and all of our county elections officials if the Department of Justice decides if they want to go the wrong way and be enemies to the folks who are actually running our elections instead of being partners for the benefit of Arizona’s voters,” Fontes declared via video.

Fontes has appealed for federal support in the form of resources, rather than threats, to help maintain election integrity.

Arizona’s voting process requires voters to provide proof of citizenship both during registration and at polling stations on Election Day. Currently, there is no substantial evidence to suggest noncitizen voting is a significant issue in the state.
