Decades after a brutal crime rocked the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, the family of a murdered agent is taking legal action against the cartel leader implicated in his death. The lawsuit targets Rafael Caro Quintero, a notorious drug trafficker linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

For years, U.S. officials have pursued Rafael Caro Quintero, who was finally captured by Mexican forces in 2022. His extradition was greenlit by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum last month.

In addition to facing criminal proceedings in New York, Caro Quintero is now being sued by the family of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Camarena, who was investigating a major drug operation, was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in Mexico in 1985 at the age of 37. The DEA noted that Camarena was “extremely close to unlocking a multibillion-dollar drug pipeline” during his mission.

The lawsuit, filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, seeks damages not only from Caro Quintero but also from the Sinaloa Cartel. The family asserts that the cartel was instrumental in Camarena’s death and remains active in criminal endeavors connected to his killers.
