Severe Flooding Strikes Navajo Nation, Resulting in Multiple Fatalities
Tragedy struck the Navajo Nation as intense flooding near Newcomb, New Mexico, led to the deaths of three individuals. Rescue efforts are actively taking place in areas such as Chinle and Many Farms in response to the severe weather conditions.
According to a social media update, authorities were alerted shortly after midnight on Wednesday about individuals drowning. The incident claimed the lives of two adults and a juvenile, and the situation is still under investigation. Searches were conducted by emergency responders to locate those swept away by the floodwaters.
In addition to Newcomb, the Navajo communities of Chinle and Many Farms experienced flooding, although no fatalities have been reported in these areas at this time.
A warning has been issued to Chinle residents situated between mileposts 451 and 454 on Highway 191, as well as those in other flood-prone regions, urging them to evacuate. This advisory was disseminated through a post by Shawna Ann Claw, a council delegate from Chinle.
In light of the flooding, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren declared a state of emergency. He mentioned in his own Facebook update that three rescue operations are in progress, though water levels are beginning to subside.
Currently, the Chinle Chapter House is being considered as an emergency shelter, as the facility in Many Farms is unavailable.
President Nygren expressed his condolences, stating, “There are no words that can ease the pain of losing a loved one so suddenly, and our hearts are especially heavy knowing that three lives were lost.”
Efforts to obtain comments from Navajo Nation emergency response officials regarding the evacuation process have not yet been successful.
